PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

ATC vet classification code QD06A - antibiotics for topical use.

Fluorophenicol is a thiamfenicol derivative in which the hydroxyl group is replaced by a fluorine atom, which determines its antibacterial activity against acetyltransferase-synthesising bacteria.

Fluorfenicol has bacteriostatic effect on gram-positive (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp.) and gram-negative (Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Pasteurella spp, Salmonella spp., Proteus spp., Pseudomonas spp. Chlamydia spp.

Fluorfenicol inhibits protein synthesis in bacterial cells. In the protoplasm, it binds to 70S ribosomal subunits, inhibits peptidyl transferase enzyme activity, thus inhibiting protein synthesis in the ribosomes of the respective bacteria.

When administered topically, fluorfenicol acts locally and hardly penetrates the circulatory system. In animals, it is metabolised to form the metabolite fluorfenicolamine. Fluorfenicol and its metabolites are excreted primarily in urine, and to a lesser extent in faeces.

Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-exudative effects. Anti-inflammatory effect is due to inhibition of arachidonic acid metabolism and release of inflammatory mediators.

When applied topically, prednisolone is absorbed and enters the bloodstream. In plasma, 90% of prednisolone is bound (with transcortin and albumin). It is biotransformed by oxidation mainly in the liver; oxidised forms are glucuronidated or sulfated. It is excreted in urine and faeces in the form of metabolites, partially unchanged.
