Isotik is a veterinary medicine used to treat dogs suffering from acute or recurrent episodes of ear infections (otitis externa). It contains three active substances: hydrocortisone aceponate, miconazole nitrate and gentamicin sulfate.
Composition
The product contains:
- hydrocortisone aceponate — 1.11 mg,
- gentamicin (sulfate form) — 1505 IU,
- miconazole (nitrate form) — 15.1 mg;
- excipient: paraffin up to 1 ml.
Pharmacological properties
The combination of three active ingredients provides antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to relieve itching associated with external otitis. These effects are due to gentamicin, miconazole, and hydrocortisone aceponate respectively.
Hydrocortisone has potent anti-inflammatory and antiallergic action. It inhibits the activity of proteases, nucleases, phospholipase, hyaluronidase, matrix metalloproteinases, and suppresses the synthesis of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandins, leukotrienes, kinins), reduces tissue permeability and exudation, leukocyte chemotaxis, connective tissue proliferation, stabilizes cell membranes, and limits free radical formation.
Gentamicin penetrates bacterial cells and inhibits protein synthesis. It is highly effective against Gram-negative aerobic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Proteus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc.) and Gram-positive cocci, including Staphylococcus spp. (even antibiotic-resistant strains).
Miconazole acts fungicidally by disrupting ergosterol synthesis — a key component of fungal cell membranes. Disrupted synthesis results in the incorporation of faulty sterols into the membrane, compromising its integrity.
Indications
The product is indicated for the treatment of external otitis in dogs caused by mixed bacterial and fungal infections, including Malassezia pachydermatis and Staphylococcus pseudointermedius.
Administration
- Clean the dog’s ear canal from wax and debris using a cotton pad soaked in an ear-cleaning solution.
- Before first use, press the pump twice to fill the cannula.
- Insert the cannula into the affected ear and administer 1 ml of the suspension.
- Apply once daily for 5 days.
Thanks to gentamicin, the product rapidly relieves inflammation, pain, itching, and swelling.
Side effects
No side effects are usually observed when used as directed.
Contraindications
- Do not use in animals with perforated eardrums.
- Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients.
Precautions
Avoid concurrent use with potentially ototoxic drugs. Use with caution in dogs with liver or kidney dysfunction.
